Hot Water Beach - this beach contains hot spots of geothermal activity. You have to find the hot water spots and dig yourself a hot tub in the sand! We met the first German when he started digging with the guys (I was busy supervising and taking photos). He was a younger guy travelling there on his own and would have had trouble digging a pool by himself, so he joined our group. It's a race against the tide! Because of where the hot water is located, you have to dig and build up a wall as fast as you can so the waves don't destroy your pool.
As the boys were digging, another lone German joined in. He was having trouble and his pool kept "caving in vis de vaves!". So he hopped in our pool and it was more the merrier.
The water was so hot in some places that you could not sit or stand in it! It was a really neat experience.
Cathedral Cove - in the parking lot to another popular site in the area, we met two German girls who were travelling and had accidentally left the lights on in their van. Luckily, we had purchased a quality $9.99 set of jumper cables and were able to help them out.
After a brief 30 minute trek (complete with sheep), we arrived at Cathedral Cove, a beautiful naturally formed feature on the beach. The signs recommend not going through the cove to the other side due to falling rocks - so I made sure that I ran. Don't worry, no falling rocks occurred.
Our last expedition in the Coromandel was to the Driving Creek Railway. Originally built to bring clay down to a potter's studio, the railway eventually grew and evolved to be open to the public. After a fun ride up the hill complete with three tunnels, a zig zag and a spiral, we arrived at the Eyefull Tower where we could take in another one of New Zealand's amazing views.
It probably would have been better if we met another German. Oh well.
